{"id":1674,"date":"2018-08-29T11:34:02","date_gmt":"2018-08-29T11:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/?p=1674"},"modified":"2022-06-10T15:29:17","modified_gmt":"2022-06-10T15:29:17","slug":"discovering-relationships-between-researchers-and-publications-using-dimensions-data-just-got-a-lot-more-colorful","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/blog\/discovering-relationships-between-researchers-and-publications-using-dimensions-data-just-got-a-lot-more-colorful\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovering relationships between researchers and publications using Dimensions data just got a lot more colorful!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dimensions and Leiden University\u2019s Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) are pleased to announce a new collaboration that permits analysis of Dimensions data in CWTS\u2019s popular <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vosviewer.com\"><b>VOSviewer<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scientometric network visualization software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dimensions users can now download structured publication data from Dimensions and easily import it into the freely available VOSviewer software to visualize relationships between publications, authors, journals, institutions, and countries. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Funding agencies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can use these visualizations to identify emerging research areas, based on clustering and overlay visualizations. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Universities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>departments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can use VOSviewer to trace knowledge flows from their publications to institutions and countries throughout the world. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Journal publishers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>researchers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alike can use Dimensions-powered network visualizations to identify high-impact authors to approach about collaboration opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It just takes three easy steps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1 &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Run a Dimensions search and export the results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1675 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/dimensions_screenshot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"930\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Fig. 1<\/strong>: Dropdown with option to \u201cExport for bibliometric mapping\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Run a search in any version of Dimensions&#8211;the free Dimensions webapp, Dimensions Plus, or Dimensions Analytics&#8211;and on the Search Results screen, you\u2019ll have the option to \u201cExport for bibliometric mapping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2 &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Create a new VOSviewer \u201cmap\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, open up VOSviewer. To use Dimensions data to create a map (visualization), click the \u201cCreate\u201d button in VOSviewer. The \u201cCreate Map\u201d wizard will open. At the first wizard prompt, select the second option (\u201cCreate a map based on bibliographic data\u201d). In the next step of the wizard, go to the \u201cDimensions\u201d tab, where you can upload a Dimensions CSV file to use as the basis of your visualization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3 &#8211; Analyze and visualize your Dimensions data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll then receive a series of prompts from the VOSviewer wizard, which will allow you to do different types of analyses and mapping. This co-author network is an example of the kinds of maps you can create with Dimensions data in VOSviewer:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1679 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/co_authorship_map_authors.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"548\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This map shows the network of co-authorship links between 1,218 authors of publications from Leiden University&#8211;either by Leiden University researchers or those that have co-authored with them.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cbubbles\u201d represent authors. The size of an author represents the number of his or her publications. Lines between authors represent co-authorship links. Two authors between whom there is a line have co-authored one or more publications. Authors that have co-authored also tend to be located close to each other in the map.<\/p>\n<p>Colors indicate clusters of authors that are relatively strongly connected by co-authorship links. The map makes visible the different research communities at Leiden University as well as the connections between these communities. For instance, the authors in the right area of the map are astronomers, while the authors in the left area of the map are social scientists.
