{"id":1504,"date":"2018-07-09T18:44:56","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T18:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/?p=1504"},"modified":"2024-10-31T16:23:42","modified_gmt":"2024-10-31T15:23:42","slug":"on-which-giants-shoulders-is-june-standing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/blog\/on-which-giants-shoulders-is-june-standing\/","title":{"rendered":"On which giants\u2019 shoulders is June standing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Tracing Three Generations of Immunotherapy Through Dimensions Data (<\/b><b><i>Part 2: On Which Giant<\/i><\/b><b><i>s<\/i><\/b><b><i>\u2019<\/i><\/b><b><i> Shoulder<\/i><\/b><b><i>s<\/i><\/b><b><i> is June Standing?)<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">characterizing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bibliometric<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impact of Carl June\u2019s thought leadership <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/blog\/tracing-three-generations-of-immunotherapy-through-dimensions-data\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Part 1 of this series<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and exploring the funding landscape of June and his collaborators, a logical next step in the analysis is to study the generation of researchers who preceded them. In other words, what can be said about the body of work which has allowed June to \u201csee further,\u201d as Newton famously put it, by \u201cstanding on the shoulders of giants.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With access to over 95 million publications, nearly 1 billion citations, and 4 billion connections of interlinked content to grants, publications, clinical trials, and patents &#8211; Dimensions allows us to quickly explore and measure research outputs. The next few figures are the analogs of the ones produced for June and his collaborators in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/blog\/tracing-three-generations-of-immunotherapy-through-dimensions-data-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part 3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, except this time we will be looking at the characteristics of the scientists whom June most often cites in his highest-impact work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1505 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cancer_Immunotherapy_in_DimensionsV5_pptx_-_Google_Slides-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"687\" height=\"473\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c4\">Although any given publication will cite many contemporaneous studies, there are inevitably frequent references to much older work considered to be the fundamental building blocks for the research field of interest. By generating the analogous figures as produced in<span class=\"c2\"><a class=\"c7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/blog\/2018\/06\/tracing-three-generations-of-immunotherapy-through-dimensions-data&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1531163834346000\">\u00a0part 1<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c0\">, but this time for the scientists on whose shoulders June and colleagues have stood, we are able to get a sense of how the field of cancer immunotherapy has evolved as the guard has changed from those who mentored June\u2019s generation to the current torch bearers leading the field.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c4\"><span class=\"c0\">An analytical view of the publications most influential to June\u2019s highly-cited work, show us that France and Italy replace Japan and Canada among the top-five countries. Although there are many possible explanations for this, the most likely one is that while many of the early breakthroughs came from France and Italy, the incentive structure was not in place for those fundamental discoveries to be translated into clinical advances of a more applied nature, thus allowing for investigators in Japan and Canada to fill in the translational void. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1506 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cancer_Immunotherapy_in_DimensionsV5_pptx_-_Google_Slides-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"688\" height=\"508\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c4\"><span class=\"c0\">Dimensions allows you to seamlessly search across content types and easily filter by researcher in the grants database, comprised of 4 million grants and $1.3 trillion in funding. Taking a deeper look at the grants using the same generation of researchers, the analytical views tab displays the top funders related to the search.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1507 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/3Cancer_Immunotherapy_in_DimensionsV5_pptx_-_Google_Slides-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"715\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Similar to the great-bang-for-the-buck funding we saw from National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases within June\u2019s ecosystem, there appears to be a similar phenomenon with the NIH\u2019s National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) among those researchers most referenced by June in his highest-impact work. Here NHLBI has the fifth-highest dollar amount, but if we look at the resulting publications, we see in the next figure that they move up to third place in terms of publishing productivity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1508 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/4Cancer_Immunotherapy_in_DimensionsV5_pptx_-_Google_Slides-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"456\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p>In just a few minutes, Dimensions uncovered interesting, high-level funding insights on the next generation of June&#8217;s research.
