He planned a two-prong approach by consulting the climate science community directly to elicit their needs and opinions as well as studied funding data to analyze past and currently available climate funding programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After conducting interviews and surveys from the climate scientists, Tristan aimed to put the data into context. He looked at some of the climate science being conducted and the impact of government funding of climate science. Dimensions allowed him to explore and connect publicly available policy documents, peer-reviewed publications, altmetrics and analytics of global competitive-grant data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Dimensions enabled Tristan to quickly view trends of the state of Canadian climate science in an effort to determine if the scientists were getting the right level of funding to meet their needs. The simple to understand data visualizations could also provide a good starting point for government and funders to explore broader insights such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Help identify where to invest tax dollars<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the best areas of research to see the highest impact of funding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plan for national-level assessment and priorities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spot blindspots for overlooked areas that aren\u2019t receiving enough funding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Measuring funding disbursed to climate scientists is complicated by the lack of a \u201cclimate science\u201d definition that can be used in assessment and tracking. Dimensions helped overcome this obstacle as grants provided directly from major funders in Canada are automatically classified by Fields of Research (FOR) according to the Australia\/New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC) system allowing all R&amp;D activity to be categorized using a single system<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tristan used Dimensions to look at the funding of competitive grants for climate-related research across Canada. Within seven key climate-related fields of research, disbursed amounts displayed different trends since 2010, with some fields of research showing significant increases, such as ecology, while others, such as atmospheric sciences, remaining fairly consistent, between CAD$2 and $3 million, since 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"741\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-1-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14447\" style=\"width:608px;height:491px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-1-2.png 741w, https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-1-2-300x243.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-1-2-371x300.png 371w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The ability to create a group filter using the research categories of interest was extremely valuable and really sped up how fast I was able to compare grants in Canada between different funders as well as against the rest of the world&#8221;, added Tristan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dimensions-one-column\"><div class=\"dimensions-section\" style=\"background-color:#FFFFFF;background-size:cover;background-position:center center;background-image:url('null')\"><div class=\"dimensions-blocks-section-inner container mx-auto md:w-3\/4 pl-0 pr-0 pt-12 pb-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">\u201cWithout Dimensions, we would have needed to hire an expert in climate science and data analysis to manually conduct the analysis over several months which wasn\u2019t feasible\u201d<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"867\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13744\" style=\"width:434px;height:289px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image-3.png 867w, https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image-3-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image-3-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image-3-451x300.png 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Tristan was very impressed at how simple Dimensions was to use and appreciated that he didn\u2019t need to be an expert in data visualization in order to generate the analysis.
